Hi everyone, recently started weight training a week ago. I do three days of heavy weightlifting and 2 days of cardio. The program I'm doing is Chelean Extreme from Beachbody. It focuses on building muscle to speed your metabolism. It focuses heavily on muscle fatigue. I'm seeing results, especially in my arms. The diet program for Chelean Extreme ( and most Beachbody programs) focus around calorie counting, restriction, and focusing on protein, mostly animal protein. I'm not sure if I'm getting enough protein. Is there any books on vegan weightlifting?

Hello everyone, I was wondering if metabolic damage real. It is a topic heavily discussed in the high-carb vegan community. Metabolic damage is the damage caused by long term calorie restriction, either through dieting or eating disorders. People who have a history of calorie restriction gain back the weight they've lost and sometimes even more. It is hard for them to get to a healthy weight. They even gain weight while eating a plant-based diet. The first time I heard about this was from a YouTuber named freelee the banana girl. She had recovered from an eating disorder and discovered veganism. At first she gained a lot of weight, but she gradually began to lose after her "metabolism recovered".  Is there any research proven that metabolism can be damaged and then repaired by eating high nutrient foods?

Thanks for answering my question :). Plantains used to be my favorite as a little girl. Maybe I'll make some oil-free tostones this week. I like to cut in circles like you said, and smash them down like a chip. We used to fry them in oil, but I'm going to try baking them on parchment. We also used to make fritters made of plantains and sweet potatoes (sometimes regular potatoes too). I'm going to trying mixing the mashed plantains and mixing them with my favorite potato, japanese sweet potato. Then I'm going to roll them in little balls, bread them with panko, and baked them in the oven. I think my family will love these for the fourth of july party I'm having. I'm going to introduce them to some of my favorite recipes from my favorite whole-food planted based cookbooks.

  • Yes, my old standard vegan meal used to be peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I thought it was a really healthy meal, but now I'm learning it was mostly fat and sugar. Now I found new staples, since I brought the Forks over Knives book.

  • Thanks for the link Sean. It's was very helpful. I may add in some vegetables for snacks too. Today I had sweet potatos topped with a homade bean salsa today. It kept me fuller than the salad I would have each morning.

  • Wow I didn't know that. I thought nuts were better for your digestion if they were blended. Thanks for the advice.

Today I discovered they are a trigger food for me. Last night I had a really bad craving for peanut butter. I had about 3 tablespoons, I had to throw it out before I binged on the whole jar. I think I will keep only flax seeds and chia in my house for now on.

Good idea, I'm still getting over my fear of carbs. I'm afraid of gaining a lot of weight from them, since my doctors always told me they will make you fat. I've been eat mostly low carb low calorie vegetables, mostly raw salads and some cooked. But I always get too full too fast and I end up getting ravenously hungry. I read on some sites beans are a great choice because of their high protein content and they are filled with lots of fiber. I used to have a small salad before a meal, now I'm thinking about having half my plate with cooked veg, and the other half with starchy vegetables, and perhaps having  a big salad top with beans.

Hello everyone, five years ago I had weightloss surgery. I had the gastric sleeve surgery. I lose almost a hundred pounds but I quickly gained most of it back due to my poor eating habits and stress. I could eat a lot more now, but not as much as used to. I could eat a regular adult meal at a restaurant (without the drink), however I quickly get full off of high fiber foods such as beans, potatoes, yams, and vegetables. I'm worried since I can't eat a larger volume of food I'll become nutrient deficient. I also notice there isn't a lot of bariatric vegans. I guess most go paleo.

  • Thanks for your response, I think I'll try starch smarter and work my way up to starch smartest. I never knew how hard it is to give up fats even healthy one's.  I think I'll watch the videos you recommended.

Hello my name is Christina. I always have been obese since childhood. In my school I was not only bigger than my classmates, but I weighed more than many of my teachers. I tried many diets over the years, weightwatchers, Jenny craig, and Atkins to name a few.  5 years ago, I decided to end my weight problem once and for all by having gastric sleeve sugery. I lost almost 100 pounds but I gained nearly half back within two years. I was dissapointed and ashamed.  I tried more low carb high protien diets, but I ended up binging and getting fatter and sicker.  I realized that surgery had made only my stomach smaller, I didn't change my mindset or cure me of my addiction of processed food.

My plantbased journey began when I was introduced to Dr.Garth Davis's  book, Proteinaholic.  After reading the book, I discovered why I regained so much weight and why weightloss surgery isn't the solution to America's obesity crisis.  I found Dr.Carney's group through facebook after seeing Chef Aj's video about juicing and blending. I discovered the reasons why I wasn't loosing weight, and why dieting failed me in the past. I keep reading blog after blog, topic after topic. I discovered so for information that the doctors didn't tell me. I learned that I had an addiction to refined foods,  and that whole foods not only help you loose weight, but are the key to health and vitality. I started the starch smart system several days ago, and so far I feel a lot better. I'm so glad that I don't have to measure, weigh, or track my food anymore. I no longer have to count calories or carbs, and I eat until I'm full and satisfied. Thank you so much Dr. Carney for your information you  have provided. I hopefully I can help others how have gotten bariatric surgery or considering it.

Hello everyone, I was wondering why plant-based doctors  such as Dr.Esselytn and Dr.Mcdougall discorage the use of healthy fats, while others like  Dr.Fuhrman encourages the use of fats to lose weight and for overall health. I find this to be confusing.  Many of Dr.Mcdougalls recipes for dressings include salt and sugar which I'm trying to avoid.  I think dressings made of avacodo, seeds, and nuts are healthier than dressings made of maple syrup and salty condiments like mustard and ketchup.
