Childhood obesity is the number one health concern today, and obesity rates continue to climb. Obesity statistics don't surprise Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He says that less than 2% of children's diets come from whole fruits and vegetables. The majority of calories consumed comes from meat, dairy, and heavily processed foods which are fiber and micronutrient deficient. These foods also promote inflammation and a high glycemic load. Children today suffer from a broad range of obesity related health problems that were previously seen only in adulthood.
Diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and elevated blood cholesterol levels are now common illnesses among young children and teens. Overweight children are also more likely to suffer from low self-esteem, depression, and negative body image. Childhood obesity can also contribute to higher and premature death rates in adulthood.
Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, spoke of the severity of this obesity epidemic, stating: "Because of the increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents." Although this is disturbing news, we can prevent this from occurring by eating a diet rich in whole, nutrient-rich plant foods.
