Urinary incontinence tends to occur at a higher frequency among women who enjoy consuming artificially sweetened beverages.
Can fondness for artificially sweetened beverages put a woman at risk of suffering from urinary incontinence? The purpose of this study was to provide answer to this question. Researchers recruited 80,388 women who volunteered information about their beverage consumption rates and occurrence of symptoms of urinary incontinence over a 3-year period.
Researchers noticed that women who drank more than 1 or more servings of artificially sweetened soft drinks per week had 10-12% higher chances of experiencing urinary incontinence than their counterparts who refrained from consuming these beverages. This study affirmed the notion that indulgence in artificially sweetened beverages may precipitate the development of urinary incontinence in women.
