Association of prebiotic fiber intake with colorectal cancer risk: the PrebiotiCa study

Promoting the consumption of plant foods loaded with the prebiotic fiber raffinose and stachyose may help reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer.

​This study was undertaken to assess the link between adhering to a high fiber diet and the likelihood of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Researchers tracked the frequency of intake of fiber-rich foods among 1,953 patients with colorectal cancer patients and 4,154 individuals without this malignancy. 

Regular ingestion of foods rich in the prebiotic fiber raffinose and stachyose was found to cut down down the risk of colorectal cancer dramatically in this study. Evidence from this study support the consumption of plant foods high in the prebiotic fiber raffinose and stachyose as part of dietary approach to curb the onset of colorectal cancer.
