Plant-based dietary patterns and the risk of digestive system cancers in 3 large prospective cohort studies

Incorporating healthy plant foods into our diets may confer us with adequate protection against digestive tract cancers, such as stomach, colorectal and liver cancer.

This study estimated digestive system cancer risk between consumers and non-consumers of plant foods. Researchers followed over 200,000 US men and women for over 30 years, monitoring their diets and health.

Researchers observed that participants on healthy plant-based diets enjoyed a significant decline in their risk of suffering from any of the cancers affecting the digestive tract, including esophageal, stomach, colorectal, and liver cancer. "Emphasizing the healthiness and quality of plant-based diets may be important for the prevention of developing cancers in the digestive system," the study concluded.
