Vegetarian diets and the risk of gastrointestinal cancers: a meta-analysis of observational studies

​Sticking to a vegetarian diet may help thwart the development of cancer in the gastro-intestinal tract, including colorectal and gastric (stomach) cancer.

​This study ascertained the relationship between high compliance with a vegetarian diet and an individual's propensity to develop cancer in the gastro-intestinal tract. Researchers reviewed data and evidence extracted from nearly 700,000 persons who participated in 8 studies. 

Researchers observed that consuming a vegetarian diet diminished the risk of having gastro-intestinal cancer, including colorectal and gastric (stomach) cancer. This study pointed out that adhering to a vegetarian diet may help foil the development of cancer in the gastro-intestinal tract.
