Individuals who regularly consume fiber from cereals are less likely to develop gastric cancer, particularly the diffused type.
This study examined the association between the consumption of fiber from cereals and the occurrence of gastric (stomach) cancer. Researchers collated and analyzed data on cereal fiber consumption and gastric cancer hazard ratio of over 435,000 subjects recruited from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. They observed that high dietary ingestion of cereal fiber decreased the likelihood of developing cancerous cells and tumors in the stomach. The anticarcinogenic action of cereal fiber was found to be more effective for the diffuse type of gastric cancer than the intestinal type. The findings of this study reveal that increased intake of fiber from cereals may be beneficial in the prevention of stomach cancer, especially the diffuse type
