Generous consumption of fruits and vegetables may contribute positively to the prevention of several chronic diseases, including stroke, hypertension, cancer, coronary heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
This study was carried out to determine how regular consumption of fruits and vegetables influence the risk of developing chronic diseases, such as stroke, hypertension, cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A team of scientists from the German Institute of Health Nutrition conducted a meticulous meta-analysis on data obtained from eligible studies.The research team found out that high dietary ingestion of fruits and vegetables diminished the risk of developing several chronic diseases, including stroke, hypertension, cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The results of this study support the theory that a substantial reduction in the incidence of chronic diseases can be achieved through an increase in the rates of consumption of fruits and vegetables of the general population.
