Ultra-processed foods consumption and risk of age-related eye diseases: a prospective cohort study with UK biobank

The love for ultra-processed foods may increase middle-aged and older individuals' chances of suffering from age-related eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

​Are consumers of ultra-processed foods at risk of developing age-related eye diseases, such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration? Researchers set out to provide answer to the above question using data obtained from 156,232 middle-aged and elderly men and women. 

Researchers noted that greater intake of ultra-processed foods heightened a participant's risk of having glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. This study found a strong connection between ultra-processed food consumption and the development of different age-related eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration in middle-aged and older men and women.
