High rate of consumption of sugar may increase the incidence of depression.
This research work studied the association between dietary intake of sugar and the incidence of major depression in 6 different countries. Researchers examined the 1991 sugar consumption and 1996 major depression prevalence data obtained from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Cross-National Epidemiology of Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder Study respectively.
The research team noticed that increased consumption of sugar correlated with higher rates of depression. This study found a consistent association between high intake of sugar and increased risk of depression.
