Hydrochlorothiazide use is strongly associated with risk of lip cancer.

Habitual use of hydrochlorothiazide may facilitate the onset of lip cancer.

This research work determined the role the antihypertensive drug hydrochlorothiazide play in the development of lip cancer. Researchers compared the use of hydrochlorothiazide with the incidence of lip cancer in a study population comprising of more than 60,000 Danish men and women.

Researchers noticed that users of hydrochlorothiazide were at higher risk of having squamous cell cancer of the lip than non-users of these medications. About 11% of all cases of squamous cell cancer of the lip were attributed to the use of hydrochlorothiazide in this study. The results of this study show that high intake of hydrochlorothiazide may raise the risk of lip cancer.
