Regular usage of statin medications may facilitate the onset of diabetes in individuals with elevated levels of cholesterol.
This research work studied the connection between the intake of statin medications and the incidence of diabetes in individuals with high blood levels of cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia). Researchers followed and evaluated more than 21,000 hypercholesterolemic Korean men and women with regards to their use of statins and development of diabetes.
Researchers discovered that diabetes occurred more frequently among statin users compared to non-users of this medication. This study supports the hypothesis that the use of statin drugs may up diabetes risk in individuals with hypercholesterolemia.
