Taking statin pills may increase the glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) number and diabetes risk of an individual.
This research work studied the impact of statin therapy on the blood levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)—an indicator of glycemic control— and diabetes risk. Researchers analyzed the drug and health records of 7,064 US men and women.
The research team found a significant increase in plasma concentrations of glycated hemoglobin and diabetes risk among individuals on statin medications. The results of this study demonstrated that statin drugs may impair glycemic control and accelerate the development of diabetes.
