Frequent drinking of alcohol may promote the development of sleep apnoea.
Sleep apnoea is a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, resulting in loud snoring, gasping for air, morning headache, daytime tiredness, and excessive daytime sleepiness. This study clarified the association between alcohol intake and the development of sleep apnoea. Researchers performed a comprehensive meta-analysis on data obtained from 21 studies published between 1985 and 2015.
Data analysis showed that the chances of experiencing sleep apnoea went up by 25% with increasing level of alcohol consumption. This meta-analysis suggests that habitual ingestion of alcohol may set an individual on the path to suffering from sleep apnoea.
