Long-term consumers of alcohol may have a high tendency to develop epithelial cancer.
Cancers derived from cells lining the organs and internal passageways of the body are known as epithelial cancer or carcinoma. They include cancer of the breast, lungs, prostate, colon, esophagus, bladder, and liver. This study investigated the alcohol-epithelial cancer connection theory. Researchers recorded the alcohol consumption levels of 44,477 Italian men and women and followed their health for 11.4 years.
Researchers observed that long-term consumption of alcohol predisposed an individual to all types of epithelial cancer. The study concluded that "in this large Italian population, alcohol consumption, particularly lifetime, is a significant risk factor for the development of epithelial cancers."
