Alcohol intake may boost a woman's chances of having cataracts.
This study examined whether regular consumption of alcohol can facilitate the onset of cataracts in women. Researchers compared the incidence of cataract between users and non-users of alcohol in a study population comprising of 34,713 Swedish women within the age bracket of 49 to 83 years.
The team of investigators discovered that the likelihood of suffering from cataracts was high among lovers of alcohol compared to never drinkers. The consumption of an extra 13 grams of alcohol per day was found to increase a woman's risk of cataract by 7% in this study The results of this study support the notion that alcohol may have a detrimental effect on eye health.
