Cannabis smoking may facilitate the development of periodontal disease in young adults.
This study examined whether an association exists between cannabis smoking and the occurrence of periodontal disease among young adults. Data on the cannabis smoking habits and periodontal disease status of 903 New Zealand young men and women who were followed from birth till the age of 32 were obtained through validated questionnaires and dental records.
Researchers noticed a positive association between cannabis smoking and the propensity to suffer from periodontal disease. This study concluded that "cannabis smoking may be a risk factor for periodontal disease that is independent of the use of tobacco."
