Dietary polyphenol intake and risk of hypertension in the Polish arm of the HAPIEE study

Eating generous portions of foods loaded with polyphenols is tied to lower risk of hypertension in women.

​This research work studied the correlation between consistent dietary exposure to polyphenols and the probability of developing hypertension. More than 2,700 Polish men and women were surveyed for a period of 2-4 years. A total of 1,735 cases of hypertension were recorded during the course of the study. 

Researchers noted that women, not men, who consumed the highest amounts of foods rich in polyphenols enjoyed a 31% reduction in hypertension risk compared to their colleagues who ate little or none of these foods. Evidence from this study show that high compliance with a diet that encourages the consumption of foods packed with polyphenols may protect women against hypertension.
