High dietary ingestion of fiber may confer individuals with significant protection against chronic kidney disease.
This study determined the role high fiber foods, such as vegetables and legumes, play in the prevention of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Researchers analyzed the eating habits and incidence rates of chronic kidney disease among 1,630 Iranian men and women recruited from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study.
Researchers discovered that participants at the top of the fiber-consumption ladder had lower risk of chronic kidney disease than those at the bottom. Chronic kidney disease risk was found to reduce by 11% for every extra 5 gram of fiber-rich foods consumed per day in this study. Evidence from this study support the inclusion of fiber-rich foods in a kidney-healthy diet.
