Increased intake of added sugars from sweetened beverages may raise the risk of prostate cancer.
This study examined the influence of frequent consumption of foods and drinks rich in added (concentrated) sugars on the incidence of prostate cancer. Researchers surveyed more than 22,000 men recruited from the Prostate Lung Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial for an average of 9 years. During the course of the study, 1,996 participants were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Researchers found an increased risk of prostate cancer among high consumers of added sugars from sweetened beverages. This study suggests that habitual intake of concentrated sugars from soft drinks may be a contributing factor to the development of prostate cancer.
