Vegans may have a low probability of developing hypothyroidism.
This study looked at the relationship between eating vegan diets and the likelihood of having hypothyroidism. The study population consisted of over 60,000 members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church who responded to questionnaires on their dietary history.
Researchers found out that the prevalence of hypothyroidism was lower in participants on vegan diets than in their counterparts who followed omnivorous and lacto-ovo vegetarian diets. This study provides evidence that vegan diets may be beneficial in the prevention of hypothyroidism.
