Fruit and vegetables consumption and breast cancer risk: the EPIC Italy study.

Regular eating of vegetables, especially tomatoes and leafy vegetables, may be tied to lower risk of breast cancer.

This study was performed to examine whether regular consumption of fruits and vegetables affects the risk of having breast cancer. The study population consisted of 31,000 Italian women aged 36-64 years who provided dietary information for 11.3 years.

Researchers observed reduced risk of breast cancer in women who consumed adequate amounts of vegetables, especially tomatoes and leafy vegetables. The results of this study strengthen the body of evidence supporting the protective effects of vegetables against breast cancer.
