Regular consumption of diets low in fiber-rich plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may increase colon cancer risk.
This study investigated the association between the consumption rate of fiber-laden plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and colon cancer risk. Researchers tracked the dietary and lifestyle patterns of 133,163 subjects. The team of investigators observed that subjects with low dietary intake of fruits, whole fibers and vegetables were at a greater risk of developing colon cancer than those who regularly consumed large servings of these fiber-rich foods. The findings of this study reveal that individuals whose diets contain low amounts of high-fiber plant foods, such as fruits and vegetables may have high tendency to develop colon cancer.
