Daily consumption of generous portions of fruits and vegetables may help curb the onset of dementia in elderly men and women.
This study explored the association between the intake of fruits and vegetables and the prevalence of dementia among older adults. Researchers compared the dietary habits and incidence rates of dementia among 17,700 elderly Chinese men and women over a 6-year period.
The research team noticed that the risk of dementia reduced by 25% among individuals who ate at least 2 servings of fruits and 3 servings of vegetables per day. This study concluded that "having at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruits daily might help prevent dementia in older adults."
