Adhering to a diet that promotes the consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables may help boost cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly individuals.
This study investigated the impact of eating different types of fruits and vegetables on cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults. Data on the dietary habits and cognitive health of nearly 1,500 Puerto Rican men and women within the age bracket of 45-75 years were obtained through validated food frequency questionnaires and mini mental state examination (MMSE) respectively.
Researchers spotted a pattern of improved cognitive function among consumers of different varieties of fruits and vegetables. This study provided further evidence that fondness for fruits and vegetables may confer middle-aged and elderly individuals with significant protection against cognitive decline.
