Adequate intake of onions and garlic may help guard against the development of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).
This study examined whether an association exists between regular ingestion of onions and garlic and the propensity of having benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Researchers analyzed the rate of consumption of onions and garlic in 1369 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia and 1451 healthy men who participated in a multi-center case-control study.
Researchers discovered that benign prostate hyperplasia is less likely to occur in men who consistently consumed onions and garlic compared to their colleagues who refrained from eating these foods. This study suggests that increased intake of onions and garlic may exert a protective effect against benign prostate hyperplasia.
