Cigarette smoking may promote the development of mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer in women.
This study evaluated the effect of cigarette smoking on the development of mucinous and non-mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer. Using data obtained from 2,134 subjects, researchers observed that a significant elevation in the risk of developing mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer was associated with cigarette smoking. According to this study, the higher the pack-years of smoking, the greater a woman's chances of suffering from mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer. On the other hand, cigarette smoking was found to have no effect on the odds of developing of non-mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer in this study. The findings of this study reveal that cigarette smoking may be a major contributing factor to the development of mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer.
