Cigarette smoking and the risk of mucinous and nonmucinous epithelial ovarian cancer.
Cigarette smoking may promote the development of mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer in women.
This study evaluated the effect of cigarette smoking on the development of mucinous and non-mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer. Using data obtained from 2,134 subjects, researchers observed that a significant elevation in the risk of developing mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer was associated with cigarette smoking.
According to this study, the higher the pack-years of smoking, the greater a woman's chances of suffering from mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer. On the other hand, cigarette smoking was found to have no effect on the odds of developing of non-mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer in this study. The findings of this study reveal that cigarette smoking may be a major contributing factor to the development of mucinous type of epithelial ovarian cancer.
