This study explored how dietary ingestion of polyphenols and flavonoids from fruits influences a pregnant woman's chances of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. Researchers matched diets with gestational diabetes mellitus diagnosis status in a cohort of 2,231 pregnant women recruited from the Chinese Tongji Maternal and Child Health Cohort Study.

Researchers discovered that participants who consumed high amounts of fruits loaded with polyphenols and flavonids had the low tendency to acquire gestational diabetes. The evidence from this study support a protective association between habitual intake of fruits rich in flavonoids and polyphenols and gestational diabetes mellitus.
