Alternative Medicine: Part 2

Webster's definition of Alternative Medicine: any of various systems of healing or treating disease that is not included in the traditional medical curricula of the United States and Britain.

But, what if a traditional medical curriculum is in error? Advancements in our society are built on top of previous advances. Each advancement is the foundation for the next, and so on. This has been going on since before recorded history. While this allows us to make amazing progress, there are options for long standing errors. For example, if any advancement is in error, the subsequent advancements will be based on that error, unless it is found to "not fit." If, however, the error fits established opinion, it will prevail. With each passing generation, the error becomes more established and soundly accepted as a "given". This is so powerful, that if any practitioner does not follow the traditional established method they are regarded as a "quack". Throughout history, ideas, theories and discoveries that conflict with established opinion is regarded negatively. Indeed, there is a long list of scientists including Copernicus, Bruno, Galileo, Campanella, Rene Descartes, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and many more, that has suffered persecution for discoveries that conflict with established wisdom.

The philosopher Voltaire (1694-1778) described this as; "It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong."
