For the Love of Grains
What do you eat if you dont eat meat? Grass? Well, not quite although many of the seeds of grasses, also known as grains, have played an important role in human diets for thousands of years. Yet, despite the historical evidence of vast civilizations thriving on grain-based diets, whole grains have recently come under attack, especially from those who promote low-carb, high-fat diets. Dr. John McDougall's article, "For the Love of Grains," addresses many misconceptions regarding the benefits of consuming whole, intact grains.
Some of these beliefs addressed in his article are as follows:
- Rice and other grains turns to sugar and make you fat.
- Soaking grains is essential to not lose vital nutrients from your body.
- Intolerance to grain proteins effects millions of people worldwide.
- Cancer causing toxic fungi can be found in grains.
- Grains are an harmful addiction which is hard to break.
Read Dr. McDougall's article to explore these statements more in depth and find out the good, the bad and the ugly. If you want to know just the cliffsnotes version it can pretty much be summed up as follows: Grains can be an excellent Starch-Smart® solution to the problem of human hunger.
