Association of zolpidem use and subsequent increased risk of epilepsy: a population-based, case-control study.

Frequent popping of the sleeping pill zolpidem may put an individual on the path to suffering from epilepsy.

This study evaluated connection between the use of zolpidem therapy to treat insomnia and the onset of epilepsy. The study population included 4,972 patients newly diagnosed with epilepsy and 19,888 persons with no previously record of epilepsy.

Researchers noted that a significant elevation in the risk of epilepsy among insomnia patients treated with zolpidem. The results of this study show that epilepsy is highly likely to occur among users of the sleeping pill zolpidem.
