Statin use and risk of new-onset diabetes: a meta-analysis of observational studies.
Individuals taking statins may have increased likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.
Statins are a group of medications administered to patients to lower their blood cholesterol levels. This study investigated the relationship between statin use and type 2 diabetes risk. Researchers systematically reviewed data obtained from 20 studies that examined over 1,000 subjects.
The team of investigators found out that statin intake elevated the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 44%. The diabetes-promoting effect of statins was found to be increase with higher dosages and longer usage. The findings of this meta-analysis suggest that individuals who take statins are highly vulnerable to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
