Statins and risk for new-onset diabetes mellitus: a real-world cohort study using a clinical research database.
Statin users are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus than non-users of this cholesterol-lowering drug.
Statins are a group of drugs that help reduce the level of low-density lipoprotein(LDL) cholesterol in the blood. This study assessed the association between statin therapy and the incidence of new-onset diabetes mellitus among Koreans. Researchers tracked data on the statin intake of 41,325 subjects and estimated the type 2 diabetes hazard ratio of each of the participant in this study. They observed a high prevalence of new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) among stain users. The results of this study support the hypothesis that people who take statins are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus.
