Antidepressants and Risk of Cataract Development: A Population-Based, Nested Case-Control Study
Long-term use of antidepressants may promote the development of cataracts.
This study examined the intake of antidepressant pills in relation to the subsequent development of cataracts. Researchers assessed the frequency of use of antidepressant medications among 7,651 patients with cataracts and 6,637 individuals without the disease.
Researchers found high rates of cataracts among individuals taking antidepressants for a long time. "We found increased risk of cataract development in patients continuously using antidepressants," the authors concluded.
