Increased Risk of Dementia in Patients With Antidepressants: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies
The odds of suffering from dementia may be stacked against an individual taking antidepressant pills.
This study evaluated the use of antidepressants in relation to the development of dementia using a meta-analytic approach. Researchers compiled data from 9 published studies that examined over 53,000 persons.
Researchers noticed that individuals on antidepressants, including medications in the class of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), had increased likelihood of suffering from dementia. This study provides further evidence that the use of antidepressant drugs may accelerate the onset of dementia.
