Semen quality in relation to antioxidant intake in a healthy male population.
High consumption of diets rich in lycopene, lutein, and beta-carotene is associated with improved semen quality in young healthy males.
This study evaluated how dietary antioxidant intake affects semen quality. Using dietary questionnaires, researchers examined the lutein, lycopene, and beta-carotene intakes of 189 young healthy males residing in the Rochester area of New York. The sperm morphology and motility of each participant in this study were also assessed.
Researchers observed a higher sperm motility among frequent consumers of diets high in lutein and beta-carotene. A better sperm morphology was seen in the semen samples of subjects who consistently consumed lycopene-rich foods. The results of this study show that generous intake of dietary antioxidants may enhance semen quality and reproductive health in young healthy males.
