Dietary beta-cryptoxanthin and inflammatory polyarthritis: results from a population-based prospective study
Following a diet rich in foods high in beta-cryptoxanthin may help curb the onset of inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
This study was carried out to confirm the protective effect of dietary intake of beta-cryptoxanthin against inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory polyarthritis. Researchers surveyed more than 25,000 men and women. During the course of the study, 88 cases of inflammatory polyarthritis were recorded.
Researchers discovered that the consumption of beta-cryptoxanthin from food sources decreased the likelihood of having inflammatory polyarthritis. "These data are consistent with previous evidence showing that a modest increase in beta-cryptoxanthin intake, equivalent to one glass of freshly squeezed orange juice per day, is associated with a reduced risk of developing inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis,"the study concluded.
