The effect of coconut oil consumption on cardiovascular risk factors: a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials.

A significant elevation in blood levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is associated with consistent consumption of coconut oil.

This meta-analysis looked at evidence from other studies that investigated the impact of dietary intake of coconut oil on plasma concentrations of lipids and other cardiovascular disease risk factors. A total 18 studies were considered for this meta-analysis.

Researchers discovered that coconut oil increased blood levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol slightly and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol markedly. This study strengthens the evidence that regular ingestion of coconut oil may significantly raise circulating levels of LDL-cholesterol—an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
