Habitual Alcohol Intake and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Young Adults in Korea
Alcohol consumption may foster the onset of atrial fibrillation in young adults.
This study investigated whether alcohol drinking is tied to the development of atrial fibrillation in young adults. Researchers gathered information on the occurrence of atrial fibrillation and alcohol consumption habits from over 1.5 million Korean men and women within the age bracket of 20-39 years.
Researchers discovered that heavy drinking of alcohol for 4 or more years increased the risk of atrial fibrillation by as much as 47%. This study affirms the notion that long-term intake of alcohol may be a contributing factor to the development of atrial fibrillation in young adults.
