Association Between Dietary Fiber Intake and Prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in a Middle-Aged and Elderly Population: a Study Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Database
Avid consumption of fiber from food sources may help protect middle-aged and older adults against COPD.
This study focused on the impact of promoting the intake of fiber-rich foods on the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in middle-aged and elderly men and women. Researchers collated and assessed data on the food choices and rate of occurrence of COPD in a cohort of over 7,000 individuals above the age of 40 years.
Researchers observed a decline in the incidence of COPD among participants at the top of the dietary fiber consumption ladder. This study suggested that fiber-containing foods should be included in every dietary strategy aimed at preventing COPD.
