Dietary fiber and reduced cough with phlegm: a cohort study in Singapore

Consuming fiber from food sources may help curtail the onset of coughing with phlegm in men and women.

This study looked at the effect regular dietary intake of fiber has on an individual's chances of experiencing chronic symptoms of respiratory diseases, such as coughing with phlegm. Out of the 49,140 Chinese men and women who enrolled and completed this study, a total of 571 of them had cough with phlegm. 

Researchers recorded a low incidence of cough with phelgm among participants at the top of the fiber consumption ladder. This study pointed out the beneficial effects of a high fiber diet on the prevention of coughing with phlegm in men and women.
