Dietary fiber and risk of irritable bowel syndrome: a case-control study.

Fondness for fiber-rich foods may help hinder the development of irritable bowel syndrome.

This study investigated the ingestion of high fiber foods and its impact on the risk of having irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Researchers collated data on the rate of fiber consumption among 90 patients with irritable bowel syndrome and 355 healthy individuals who attended a gastroenterology clinic in the United States.

Researchers observed an inverse association between increased intake of high fiber foods and low probability of suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. This study supports the theory that habitual consumption of fiber-containing foods may play a role in significantly reducing the risk of irritable bowel syndrome.
