Sodium intake and blood pressure in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental and observational studies

Greater intake of foods high in sodium is tied to elevated blood pressures in children and adolescents.

This study conducted a meta-analysis on 85 studies that documented the impact of high dietary intake of sodium on blood pressure readings in children and adolescents. More than 50,000 children and adolescents took part in these studies.

Researchers found out that systolic and diastolic blood pressures rose by 0.8 mm Hg and 0.7 mm Hg respectively for every extra 1 gram of sodium consumed per day. This meta-analysis showed that increased ingestion of sodium-rich foods may raise the blood pressures of children and adolescents.
