Alcohol Quantity and Type on Risk of Recurrent Gout Attacks: an Internet-Based Case-Crossover Study
The consumption of all types of alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and liquor, may trigger episodes of recurrent gout attacks.
This study assessed the odds of recurrent gout attacks occurring among alcohol consumers. Researchers asked 724 gout patients to fill out questionnaires related to their lifestyle, including their alcohol drinking habits.
Researchers found out that consumers of all types of alcohol, including beer, liquor, and wine, experienced more frequent episodes of gout attack than their counterparts who refrained from drinking alcohol. The study affirms that "episodic alcohol consumption, regardless of type of alcoholic beverage, was associated with an increased risk of recurrent gout attacks, including potentially with moderate amounts."
