Caffeine intake and its association with urinary incontinence in United States men: results from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2005-2006 and 2007-2008.

High dietary exposure to caffeine may put a man at high risk of suffering from urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine resulting from loss of bladder control. This study determined if there is a connection between dietary intake of caffeine and the occurrence of urinary incontinence in men. Researchers charted caffeine consumption against prevalence of urinary incontinence in a study population comprising of 5,297 US men.

Researchers found a far higher incidence of urinary incontinence among men who consumed an average of 250 mg of caffeine (equivalent to 2 cups of coffee) per day. The data from this study suggest that generous consumption of caffeine-containing products may contribute positively to the onset of urinary incontinence in men.
