Vegetable, fruit and antioxidant nutrient consumption and subsequent risk of hepatocellular carcinoma: a prospective cohort study in Japan.
High dietary ingestion of fruits, vegetables, and other antioxidant-rich foods may exert a protective effect against liver cancer.
The purpose of this research work was to study how frequent consumption of fruits, vegetables, and antioxidant-containing foods affects the chances of acquiring hepatocellular (liver) cancer. Researchers compared the diets of 19,998 Japanese men and women with rate of occurrence of liver cancer in the study population.
The research team found out that habitual intake of fruits, vegetables, and other antioxidant-rich foods directly correlated with lower risk of liver cancer in men and women. The findings of this study reveal that the odds of avoiding liver cancer may be tilted in favor of individuals who regularly consumed diets high in fruits, vegetables, and other antioxidant-packed foods.
