The long-term association between physical activity and risk of dementia in the community: the Hisayama Study
Engaging in physical activity may lower the risk of dementia in older adults.
This study determined whether physical activity influences an elderly individual's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Researchers matched physical activity levels with dementia diagnoses in a study population comprising of 803 Japanese men and women above the age of 64 years.
Researchers discovered that physically active individuals had brighter chances of keeping Alzheimer's disease and other dementia at bay than their counterparts who live a sedentary lifestyle. This study provides further evidence that regular exercise may help guard against the onset of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.
