Alcohol consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japanese: a systematic review.
Generous intake of alcohol may accelerate the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japanese men and women.
This research work assessed the association between the consumption of alcohol and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japanese population. Researchers reviewed data on alcohol intake and type 2 diabetes mellitus risk obtained from 7 prospective cohort studies. They found out that high type 2 diabetes mellitus risk was generally associated with increased intake of alcohol in men and women. However, when body mass index (BMI) was considered, some studies suggested that regular consumption of high quantities of alcohol increased diabetes mellitus risk in low-BMI subjects.
