Smoking and the long-term incidence of cataract: the Blue Mountains Eye Study.

Cigarette smoking may elevate the risk of developing cataracts.

This study evaluated how cigarette smoking influences the risk of having cataracts. A total of 6,060 Australia men and women aged 49 years and above participated in this study and their smoking status and incidence rates of cataracts were assessed through face to face interviews.

Researchers noted that cigarette smokers faced increased risk of developing cataracts. This study provides evidence that smoking may trigger the formation of cataracts in men and women.
